1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
3 Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
Ezra is the first of six post captivity books. In chapters 1-6 we find: National Restoration. In chapters 7-10 we find: Spiritual Renewal.
The two elements of spiritual renewal are:
#1. Confession (human element)
#2. Cleansing (divine element)
In Chapter nine we find:
1 Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.
3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.
#1. A Lack of Separation (vs. 1-2)
#2. A Load of Sorrow (vs. 3-4)
5 And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the Lordmy God,
6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.
#3. Sacrifice and Submission (vs. 5)
#4. Shame (Vs. 6)
8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
9 For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
#5. A Space of Grace (vs.8-9)
1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.
2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
4 Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.
5 Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.
Seven Mandates For Spiritual Renewal:
#1. There Must Be: Crying. (vs. 1-2)
#2. There Must Be: Commitment. (vs. 3-5)
#3. There Must Be: Courage. (vs. 4)
#4. There Must Be: Continuation. (vs. 4)
#5. There Must Be: Consecration (vs.6)
#6. There Must Be: A COMING TOGETHER. (vs. 7)
#7. There Must Be: Confession. (vs. 11)
#8. There Must Be: CONGREGATIONAL LEADERS. (vs. 14)
We have a task too big to do within ourselves. Notice Ezra chapter seven.
9 For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.
11 Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the Lord, and of his statutes to Israel.
How To Regain Our Strength For Service:
#1. We need the good hand of the God upon us. (vs. 9)
#2. We need to prepare our hearts. (vs. 10)
#3. We need to seek the Lord. (vs. 10)
#4. We need to study His Word. (vs. 10)
#5. We need to be doers of the Word also. (vs. 10)
#6. We need to teach others also. (vs. 10)
Jonah 1:1-3 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
Revival was delayed NOT because of the wickedness or brutality of Nineveh. Revival was delayed due to the rebellion and stubbornness of a preacher. The principal in both the Old Testament and in the New Testament is that Revival is given and hindered based on the attitude and action on believers.
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." ~ 2 Chronicles 7:14
"For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God.." ~ 1 Peter 4:17
Why Is Revival Delayed?
#1. Because we are running from the presence of God. (Jonah 1:3)
#2. Because we are sleeping on God. (Jonah 1:5,6)
#3. Because of a lack of fear of The Lord.
#4. Because of a lack of praying (Jonah 2:1-2)
#5. Because of a lack of thanksgiving. (Jonah 2:9)
#6. Because of unpaid vows. (Jonah 2:9)
#7.Because of a lack a sacrifice.(Jonah 2:9)
#8. Because of a lack of preaching. (Jonah 3:2)
There MUST be THE PERSONAL REVIVAL of chapter two, before there can be THE PUBLIC REVIVAL of Jonah chapter three. We must REMEMBER The LORD (2:7), we must BELIEVE GOD (3:5), and we must REPENT (3:8) in order to have REVIVAL in America.
1 Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,
2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.
7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.
10 And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
1 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
'Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings," ~ 1 Peter 2:1
1. Malice: A desire to harm others or to see others suffer; extreme ill will or spite.
2. Guile: Treacherous cunning; skillful deceit.
3. Hypocrisies: False appearances or actions.
4. Envies: Feelings of discontent and resentment aroused by and in conjunction with desire for the possessions or qualities of another.
5. Evil speakings: Communication that is intended to cause harm or injury.

"For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!"
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
I. The Promise of Salvation - Vs. 12-13
A. Availability of salvation "whosoever shall.."
B. Assurance of salvation "shall be saved."
II. The Prerequisite of Salvation - Vs. 14
A. Reason people don't call is because they do not believe.
B. Reason many don't believe is because they have never heard.

7 million people in the world. 2.3 unreached. Not just unsaved, but unreached, meaning they have no reasonable access to the gospel.
16,000 people groups. 6,000 people groups unreached.
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." ~ 2 Chronicles 7:14
Context: Instruction given to Israel as Solomon's Temple is being sanctified.
Application: Instruction for national, local church, and personal revival.
#1. PRIDE will hinder real revival. "...shall humble themselves."
#2. A lack of PRAYING will hinder real revival. "..and pray."
#3. Misplaced PRIORITIES will hinder real revival. "..and seek my face."
#4. PRESUMPTION will hinder real revival. "..and turn from their wicked ways." Many presume upon the longsuffering, the mercy, and the grace of God.
Conclusion: What stumbling blocks are in your life? What is hindering you from real revival?

#2. Abraham LED Isaac. Vs. 3

1 Kings 19:19-21
19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
In 1 Kings 19 we see Elijah:
#1. Fearing and Fleeing from Jezebel.
#2. Feeding from and Following Jehovah.
#3. Falling his mantle upon Elisha.
The Mantle Represents:
#1. Spiritual Authority
#2. Spiritual Appointment
#3. Spiritual Anointing
The killing of the cows and the burning of the plows signified a destroying of the "old life".
In 1 Samuel 15 Saul DEFEATED, but did not DESTROY; as a result he lost his POWER and his POSITION. He lost his AUTHORITY AND HIS ANOINTING.
In the Gospels Simon DEPARTED (Matthew 4:18-20 and Matthew 19:27), but he did not DESTROY; as a result he went back to fishing (the old life). Read John 21.
When we follow Christ, He gives us a new: PURPOSE, PRIORITY, PERSPECTIVE, and PROVISION.
ELISHA was a man of:
Wealth vs. 20
Work vs. 20
Willingness vs. 21
Like Elisha we need to destroy any ACTION, ATTITUDE, or AMBITION that will hinder us as we follow Christ.
Elisha said his final farewell to: FAMILY, FRIENDS, FINANCIAL SECURITY, and FAMILIARITY.
Read: Luke 9:23, Luke 9:57-62, Luke 14:16-20, Luke 18:18-23
Casual Christianity will NEVER do in the sight of the Lord. Salvation is free to all who believe, but discipleship has a cost. IT IS TIME FOR US TO KILL SOME COWS AND BURN SOME PLOWS IN 2014.
"Anxiety is the painful uneasiness of the mind that feeds on impending fears." In its mildest form we simply become tied in knots and fret and worry. In its most severe form we panic.
What Does Anxiety Cause?
- A lack of productivity and fruitfulness.
Anxiety causes one to become entangled in worry and overly concerned with the unimportant.
"Anxiety chokes our ability to distinguish the incidental from the essential, so we get distracted. In the midst of the worrisome details, we add endless fears, doubts, tasks, expectations, and pressures. Eventually we lose focus on what matters. We become distracted by incidentals and, at the same time, neglect the essentials. We have allowed incidental worries to entangle our minds like a thorny vine."
-A lack of joy and a judgmental spirit.
Anxiety causes us to be impatient and hyper-critical of people. In the long term it causes us to be bitter and unforgiving of folks.
What Causes Anxiety?
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." ~ 2 Tim. 1:7
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." ~ Eph. 6:12
How is Anxiety Cured?
#1. By walking in the spirit and not in the flesh.
#2. By walking by faith and not by sight.
#3. By attempting to please God, rather than people.
#4. By being content, rather than unsatisfied.
#5. By trusting Christ, rather than ourselves.
Man is body, soul, and spirit. I for one understand that there are physical (body), emotional (soul) and spiritual aspects of worry (anxiety). In this blog entry I simply have been concerned with the spiritual aspect. I do not pretend to know all the answers; in fact I do not even know all the questions.
" Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
"And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and MINDS through Christ Jesus." ~ Phil. 4:6-7
