As a Christians we should be sensitive to the needs of others. However we can be too sensitive, when it comes to ourselves. So where is the balance?
First: We must attempt to see things from the perspective of others. Often two people see the exact same event differently. It has been said: there are two sides to every story. Many times however there are three sides to every story; his side, her side and really what happened.
Second: What causes one to be overly sensitive? Perhaps one's upbringing, abuse, being spoiled, too much time on their hands, pride or even a lack of confidence.
Third: What causes one to lack sensitivity? Perhaps one's upbringing, selfishness (lack of consideration), being busy, in a hurry, or simply their personality (being a "straight talker").
In order to be a Christ-like servant, we must prefer others over ourselves. Both the sensitive and the insensitive tend to struggle with this. As a pastor, I strive to be sensitive to the needs of others. However I must not be sensitive about what others say to me or about me.
#1. Building a wall of defense which causes us to loose sight of others.
#2. Becoming Paranoid and looking to become offended.
Most people struggle finding a balance between sensitivity and insensitivity. Where do you find yourself? Are you in a struggle with sensitivity? Let's seek to be honest with ourselves and with God concerning this common struggle.
